Clinical-anamnestic and instrumental data in outpatients suffering from venous disease

1995

The authors studied 200 consecutive outpatients with symptoms due to venous disease of the lower limbs. All the patients underwent anamnestic, clinical and instrumental evaluation (c.w. Doppler velocimetry and strain-gauge plethysmography). The results of this study showed that some anamnestic and clinical data are significantly related to venous disease detected by instrumental techniques. The superficial and deep vein hypertension were, instead, correlated to oral contraceptive use.

Uterine fibroids risk and history of selected medical conditions linked with female hormones

2004

To understand the role of several medical conditions on the risk of uterine fibroids, we analysed the findings of a large case-control study. Cases were 843 women aged 54 or less (median age 43 years, range 21-54) with histologically confirmed uterine fibroids, whose clinical diagnosis dated back no more than 2 years. Indications for surgery were recurrent menorrhagia or ultrasound evidence of fibroids larger than 10 cm in diameter. Controls were 1557 women aged 54 years or less of comparable quinquennia of age (median age 43 years, range 21-54) who had not undergone hysterectomy and were admitted for acute, non-gynecologic, non-hormonal, non-neoplastic conditions to a network of hospitals …

Interesting insights into the treatment of madness are to be gained from the…

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance characterization of a hamartoma in an asyntomatic child

2009

Abstract Background The prevalence of primary cardiac neoplasms is approximately 0.3% and these masses should be distinguished from many of other primary and secondary processes that can occur in the heart. Further assessment of the left ventricular mass presents important clinical implications. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance was used. Clinical case An asyntomatic 12-year-old child was referred for cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging to further assess a left ventricular mass found after an echocardiography, executed for assessment for sport activity. His past medical history was absolutely negative. The patient was in optimal state of health. The EKG showed an aspecific ST elevatio…

Role of medical history and medication use in the aetiology of upper aerodigestive tract cancers in Europe: the ARCAGE study

2012

ABSTRACT Background The study aimed to investigate the role of medical history (skin warts, Candida albicans, herpetic lesions, heartburn, regurgitation) and medication use (for heartburn; for regurgitation; aspirin) in the aetiology of upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) cancer. Methods A multicentre (10 European countries) case–control study [Alcohol-Related CAncers and GEnetic susceptibility (ARCAGE) project]. Results There were 1779 cases of UADT cancer and 1993 controls. History of warts or C. albicans infection was associated with a reduced risk [odds ratio (OR) 0.80, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.68–0.94 and OR 0.73, 95% CI 0.60–0.89, respectively] but there was no association with her…

Symptoms of depression and anxiety predict mortality in patients undergoing oral anticoagulation: Results from the thrombEVAL study program

2015

Abstract Background/objectives Depression and anxiety are highly prevalent in cardiovascular patients. Therefore, we examined whether the 4-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-4, measuring symptoms of depression and anxiety) predicts all-cause mortality in outpatients with long-term oral anticoagulation (OAC). Methods The sample comprised n=1384 outpatients from a regular medical care setting receiving long-term OAC with vitamin K antagonists. At baseline, symptoms of anxiety and depression were assessed with the PHQ-4 and the past medical history was taken. The outcome was all-cause mortality in the 24month observation period. The median follow-up time was 13.3months. Results N=191 pati…

The clinical impact of PCR‐based point‐of‐care diagnostic in respiratory tract infections in children

2020

Abstract Background Children are commonly affected by respiratory tract infections. Based on clinical symptoms, laboratory evaluation, and imaging, the causative pathogen often cannot be delineated. Point‐of‐care‐testing systems that provide an opportunity for fast detection of common viruses and some bacteria can therefore influence treatment's options. We aimed to examine whether the Biofire® FilmArray® has an effect on antibiotic treatment, duration of antibiotic therapy, and length of hospital stay within a pediatric cohort. Methods We included children who were admitted to inpatient treatment with an acute respiratory tract infection from 02/2017 to 04/2018 using the FA respiratory pan…

Psoriatic arthritis onset in psoriatic patients receiving UV phototherapy in Italy

2018

Abstract BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a chronic, recurrent, and immune-mediated inflammatory disease that affects 2-3% of the world population. A substantial proportion of patients with psoriasis, approximately 40 %, develop a form of inflammatory arthritis known as psoriatic arthritis (PsA), the arthritis follows the development of psoriasis, and it will develop simultaneously or possibly before the appearance of skin lesions. The presence of PsA indicates a need for more active intervention rather than purely topical therapies or UV-based therapies. The aim of this multicenter, retrospective, epidemiological study was to estimate the incidence of PsA in psoriatic patients receiving UV treatme…

Orthotopic liver transplantation in a malignant hyperthermia susceptible patient.

2005

We present a patient with hepatitis C and D and hepatocellular carcinoma who underwent preoperative evaluation for orthotopic liver transplantation. In his past medical history, he reported a life-threatening event during tonsillectomy in 1975. Intubation was impossible due to extreme jaw muscle tension, followed by excessive elevation in body temperature, tachycardia, and coma for a few days. We evaluated him for malignant hyperthermia, according to the European Malignant Hyperthermia Group Protocol, and found him highly positive in both the halothane and caffeine test, respectively. Three months later, we performed an orthotopic liver transplantation. During retransplantation 4 years late…
